HSLU - 2023

VICE VERSA - Winner of the design contest for the 4viertel facade.

"Vice-versa" is a kinetic installation that explores the interaction between color and movement, light and contrast, viewers and the facade.

The north facade of the 4viertel complex is located in a narrow alley that offers two vantage points, one at each end of the facade. These two sides present different perspectives on the building—two ways to perceive and engage with it. I aimed to align my concept with this interplay of perspective and contrast.

By giving the facade an optical effect—specifically, a lenticular design—curiosity and fascination come together, giving viewers a natural impulse to move around it. The effect is achieved through a harmony of colors and geometric patterns applied to aluminum profiles. These profiles span the entire length of the facade, are evenly arranged, and create a wave of color that shifts with just a few steps. The side of the building facing Reuss features warm tones, while the side facing Lucerne displays cool tones. Each element is colored in four different hues. The color palette was chosen to create contrast between the facade and its surroundings, as well as between the two sides of the design. These vibrant tones complement each other in both their solidity and dynamism.

Each piece is part of the overall composition of the facade. They convey different moods and emotions depending on which side—and at what height—visitors arrive or depart. This effect transforms viewers into participants within the artwork, encouraging them to move in order to experience the lenticular grid.

The choice of material was made due to aluminum's durability, light weight, and ability to support highly colorful surfaces. "Vice-versa" symbolizes not only the eternal exchange between the two sides of the facade, but also the continuous interaction between viewers and the design.
